ICE CREAM GLACIER

Glaciers are massive sheets of ice that slowly slide across land, scraping up dirt and rocks as they carve their way through mountain passes and valleys.  Want to see how that works – using ice cream?

First of all, here are two videos describing how glaciers work:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1InAfn7am0 (5:3) - “How Glaciers Change the World!” - on the younger side

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbYXiJsF5mw (4:0) – “All About Glaciers for Kids: How Glaciers Form and Erode to Create Landforms” – with good photography

For this doable you will need:

  • 9” x 13” baking pan

  • A book that is 2” to 4” thick (to act as a hill)

  • 1 pint of vanilla ice cream

  • Ice cream scoop

  • Graham crackers

  • Ice cream add-ins, such as bits of cookies, small candies like M&Ms, nuts, chocolate chips, sprinkles, mixed together

Steps:

1.  Line the bottom of the pan with a single layer of the graham crackers.  That will be the solid bedrock.

2.  Sprinkle the add-ins on top of the graham crackers to act as the dirt and rocks on top of the bedrock.

3.  Gently prop up the end of the pan using the book, to form a hill for the glacier to slide down on.

4.  Put scoops of the ice cream at the top of the hill on top of the add-ins, and in about 5 minutes it should begin to melt.  (You can give it a little shove with a spoon to start it off down the hill, if needed.)

5.  Watch what happens as your “ice cream glacier” slides down the “hill.”  Does it pick up some “rocks and dirt” as it goes?

6.  When your glacier reaches the bottom of the pan, you get to eat your experiment!  YUM!
