A BORROWER’S PARTY
FOR DOLLS AND STUFFED ANIMALS
Have you read the book, The Borrowers, by Mary Norton? It’s about tiny people who live in the walls and floors of old houses, who “borrow” small things from the people who live there while being careful not to be “seen.” Thimbles become saucepans, stamps become wall art, burnt wood matches become kindling, cigar boxes become bedrooms, spools of thread become stools

And we think those things have just gone missing! But they might be just the right size for our dolls and stuffed animals to use too.
So for this doable, pick a special occasion – such as a holiday, or a doll’s birthday, or the anniversary of the day the elephant escaped from the zoo and came to live with you, or the fact that it is still raining – and give a Borrower-sized party.
The dolls and stuffed animals need to be brushed and dressed in their very best, of course. See what you can “borrow” from around where you live to use for the party:
Small bowls might work for chairs – right size up with a little stuffing, or overturned like a stool.
The Borrowers adapt things too, like cutting up and sewing old leather gloves into shoes. So you can cut out plates from cardboard or paper plates, and napkins from paper towels (which we did).
Then see what small bits of food you can find or make for the party. You can join the party and eat the goodies too!
We used blueberries, and bread cut into very small squares for open-faced sandwiches spread with cheese, jam, and chutney.
We pretended applesauce was soup.
How about apples cut into small bits, and maybe chopped nuts?
Or perhaps pieces of cookies or candy cut the right size?

At our party we couldn’t resist using some of a set of 1840s English children’s china that Aunt Sharon gave us years ago. In The Borrowers, Pod is “borrowing” a teacup and saucer from a set like this for his wife, Homily, when he is “seen” by a boy in the big, old house. Uh oh … .
